What Causes Sensitive Teeth?

Tooth sensitivity occurs when the inner layer of your tooth (dentine) becomes exposed through enamel wear, receding gums, or cracks. Our clinicians identify the underlying cause and provide targeted treatment to relieve discomfort and protect your teeth long term.

We carry out a thorough examination including visual checks, sensitivity testing, and digital X-rays to pinpoint the cause of your discomfort. Understanding the root cause is essential for choosing the most effective treatment.

We offer professional desensitising applications, fluoride varnishes, and bonding agents that seal exposed dentine and reduce sensitivity. These treatments provide faster, longer-lasting relief than over-the-counter products.

We advise on brushing technique, toothpaste selection, and dietary changes to prevent further enamel erosion. If gum recession is involved, we will recommend treatment to address the underlying cause.

Why are my teeth suddenly sensitive?

Sudden sensitivity can result from enamel erosion, gum recession, a cracked tooth, tooth decay, or a recent dental procedure. A clinical examination will identify the exact cause.

In many cases, yes. Depending on the cause, treatments such as bonding, fluoride application, gum grafting, or crowns can provide long-lasting or permanent relief.

Desensitising toothpaste can help manage mild symptoms, but it treats the symptom rather than the cause. We recommend a clinical assessment to address the underlying issue.

It can be. Sensitivity sometimes indicates decay, a crack, or gum disease that needs professional treatment. It is always worth having it checked by a dentist.

Some patients experience temporary sensitivity during or after whitening treatment. We use desensitising products and adjust the process to minimise this.
